Affordable Housing
- Foundation Communities - offers affordable housing to families and singles who meet certain criteria.
The three basic requirements for living in a Foundation Communities property are:
• You meet specific income guidelines (which vary by location)
• You pass criminal and credit checks
• You have a good rental history
- H.U.D. - Texas - federal agency for Housing and Urban Development. They provide assistance to local Public Housing Authorities in offering subsidized and low-cost housing options. Find information here on subsidized apartments and section 8 vouchers plus many other programs.
- Housing Authority of Austin (HACA) - this is Austin's local Public Housing Authority, go here to apply for Housing Choice Voucher Program (section 8) or public housing. There are wait lists for both public housing and section 8. The section 8 wait list is always long and often closed. HACA only accepts applications for section 8 for brief periods each year. To check on the status of the waitlist go to the HACA website. To apply, download and fax the application from the HACA website or go to the office in person at 1124 S. IH-35. Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m
- Austin Tenant's Council - provides services and information to assist tenants and landlords in understanding their rights and responsibilities. ATC also has an indepth Guide to Affordable Housing in the Greater Austin Area which can be downloaded from their website. Listings of affordable rental properties starts on page 14 of the guide.
- Neighborhood Housing and Community Development - the City of Austin has provided a directory of agencies and non-profits that provide help finding and maintaining affordable housing.
Rental Assistance
- United Way rental assistance directory - provides a list of agencies and programs that can offer partial or one-time assistance with rent and utilities.
- Caritas - Offers one time rental assistance if:
- have not received rental assistance from Caritas in the past year
- have been employed at last job for at least 2 months

- Austin Travis County Support- Call 854-4120 to see if you qualify. Open office hours 8:00 AM-5:00 PM. Located Palm Square Suite 1000 in downtown Austin.
- Sacred Heart Catholic Church (Austin) - St. Vincent De Paul Society - Provides financial assistance for the last $50 for rent, utilities (gas, water, electricity), prescriptions, or medical bills. INTAKE PROCEDURE: Does not accept walk-ins; accepts 3 calls per day, beginning at 9:15am, Mon - Fr, (512) 926-1171 Main
- University Avenue Church Of Christ - Christian Service Center - Provides small amounts of financial assistance for rent, mortgage, gas, electricity, water, prescriptions, medical bills, orthopedic shoes, glasses, Texas ID cards, birth certificates, criminal background check fees and other emergency needs.
The center works by appointment only and is located on the first floor of the church, next to the kitchen. To learn more about this ministry and schedule an appointment, call (512) 476-6088, ext 300 between the hours of 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Monday through Thursday. It is best to call on Mondays, because appointments for the week fill up quickly.
- Micah 6 - Clergy from nine churches around the University of Texas campus volunteer their time and efforts to provide food and meals to those in need. This organization brings dfferent faith communities together to reach out to those in need. The Member Church Outreach Services include freeze night shelters, meals and food, financial assistance, clothing and work boots, crisis counseling, referral information, and other things (i.e. bus passes, ID's, eye exams, glasses, and medication). Shelters and Transitional Housing
HTF community resources - the Homeless Task Force has provided a list of programs and agencies that provide emergency shelter and transitional housing.
For Families
- Foundation for the Homeless - an organization of churches that provides shelter for families with children. Appointments for intake required.
- Marywood - shelter for women with children
- St. Louise House - transitional housing for homeless women with children
